Herp of the day

Herp of the day: Horseshoe viper

The Horseshoe Pit Viper (Trimeresurus strigatus) is a venomous snake endemic to the Western Ghats of India. Little is known about this snake, though it is thought to be primarily terrestrial and nocturnal, and has been seen preying on rodents, frogs, and other snakes.

The common name of the species is based on the presence of a pale buff horseshoe-shaped (i.e., inverted ‘U’) mark on the nape.
